OLD DUVAL COLORED CEMETERY aka FREEDMAN’S CEMETERY, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida

Directions: From corner of Main and Union Streets in the Springfield section of Jacksonville, go east on Union Street five blocks, turn left (north) on Washington Street, one block to the corner of Washington and Jessie Streets to the entrance. Section 12, Township 2 South, Range 26 East. The cemetery consists of 2 acres, 132 feet by 420 feet. Oldest marker is that of Caesar Richardson who died in April 1725 at age 27. Written on his grave marker is “Asleep in Jesus” and “K of P” (Not Knights of Pythias which wasn’t established until 1864). His grave marker and maybe his body was removed to Old Duval Cemetery, but no one knows when.
