WHITMIRE CEMETERY, Ferry Pass, Escambia County, Florida

Notes: Whitmire is one of the oldest and one of the largest cemeteries in Escambia County. There is a large black cemetery adjacent to the main cemetery, and is separated by a fence line. One senior resident and historian suggested that there could be graves here that dated to the 1830's! Certainly before the Civil War. It can be approached from several directions. Directions: Drive North on S291. Davis Highway, past the University Mall, and just past The West Florida Hospital to Johnson Avenue and the stoplight. Turn left and drive PAST the intersection of University Boulevard, and continue straight through until Johnson rounds to the left into Whitmire Road. This large cemetery can be seen on the left, and has two entrances, one with a large white archway. There are 1660 burials listed.
